Assalamu alaikum
Thank you for this question. In the outset, I've to make it clear that the verse of sura al-Baqarah no 200 has nothing to do with any thing halal or haram. It mainly deals with the rituals of Hajj and deciding about the people of this world that there is no share for them in Hereafter. Now coming to the point, Smoking is not haram but termed as makru (undesirable) which should be avoided. The Quran makes haram only those things which are intoxicating. In precise words, They cover completely your brain, your aql and your senses so much so that you are out of your senses, can commit anything while you don't know. Alcohol and narcotix drugs fall into this category or any thing related to this quality. Smoking is exampted from this category. Secondly, we need a strong evidence from the Quran or Sunnah to make anything haram. This is not an easything as we have considered. You must carry on your relationship with your friends.
